Interactive Projection – A Hand, Held

Interactive Projection at Hilsea Lido

As part of the WeShine Portsmouth Festival, Warehouse Digital collaborated with interactive projection designer Tom Buckley to bring his vision to life. The challenge? To design, construct, and install multiple projection surfaces across a pedestrian bridge at Hilsea Lido, transforming the space into an interactive, immersive artwork.

Pre-Visualisation & Design

To ensure the success of this ambitious installation, we used Blender for full 3D pre-visualisation, allowing us to accurately demonstrate the concept to event organisers and clients. This process was crucial in identifying potential challenges before installation, ensuring a seamless execution.

Technical Innovation & Installation

We installed a high-powered projector positioned to cast visuals through the gauze projection surfaces and onto the woodland opposite the bridge. This created a layered visual experience, blending digital projections with the surrounding environment.

The interactive element, designed by Tom Buckley, used a kinetic system that measured live electrical resistance from participants standing in the dedicated interaction zone. By holding copper rods, visitors controlled the projections, with the visuals responding to how tightly they held hands and their level of physical contact.

A Community-Driven Artwork

The projected content combined abstract digital artwork with art created by local young people during creative technology workshops. The result was a dynamic, evolving experience that celebrated connection and collaboration.

This project, produced by Portsmouth Creates, was part of the wider WeShine Festival of Light, bringing large-scale digital art installations to public spaces across Portsmouth.
